R O M A N I A

My work is a commemoration of my relationship to the country of Romania where I resided for several years. Her architecture and worn buildings, communist block housing, the matte and dusty color palette, markets, people, taxis and roads, and her music are imbued in me. In the years since returning from Romania I have had an ongoing internal conversation regarding this place. From this dialogue came the materialization of these large works.

The largest painting extends nine feet high by eight feet wide and six inches deep. Their scale, as well as their positioning up on the wall, is a direct reference to architecture. In some of the works, cuts and slits appear, creating narrow recesses that disrupt the form. The result at times is an asymmetrical gestalt;a weighty area balanced by a svelte fragment.

The facades of the paintings have the appearance of hand painted signs, chipped or worn away paint, undecipherable text, and graffiti, while their textures range from light scratches drawn into the surface to bumpy course building walls.

These works, not unlike alphabet letters or symbols, are a condensed manifestation of my Romania.
